Dental Nursing Apprenticeships

Dental Nurse Integrated Apprenticeship – Level 3 (NEBDN Model)
Components:
~ Apprenticeship Standard – Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours.
~ Level 3 Diploma in Dental Nursing.
~ Level 2 Functional Skills in English (where applicable).
~ Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths (where applicable).
~ 20% Off-the-Job Training.
~ End Point Assessment – Knowledge Test & Portfolio (before Gateway), Professional Discussion (post Gateway).
Please Note: This model involves no observations. Instead, Expert Witness Testimonies are used to support the assessment of practical skills.
- You must be at least 16 Years of age.
- You must live in the UK.
- You must have been a UK resident for at least 3 years (Certain exceptions apply. Please contact us to learn more.)
- You cannot be in full-time education.
- You must be in a job relevant to the apprenticeship.
- You will be required to have a Hepatitis B injection and pass a DBS check.
All duties and their corresponding KSB’s can be found on Skills England.
Duty 1: Undertake routine dental nursing clinical and technical procedures and tasks relevant to the assessment and diagnosis of patients.
Duty 2: Undertake routine dental nursing clinical and technical procedures and tasks relevant to treatment planning and onward referral of patients.
Duty 3: Communicate effectively, maintaining confidentiality and records appropriately.
Duty 4: Provide professional leadership within the team, working in partnership with patients, dental teams, and other health and social care professionals.
Duty 5: Practice as an autonomous professional exercising judgement and integrity, keeping within the scope of practice and the legal and ethical boundaries of the profession.
Duty 6: Practice in a non-discriminatory and inclusive manner, recognising the impact of culture, equality and diversity.
Duty 7: Promote Oral health to individuals and the wider population and raise awareness of its role in preventing ill health amongst communities.
Duty 8: Reflect on, review and develop the quality of one’s own practice.
Duty 9: Manage own health and well-being and promote the well-being of others in the team.
Dental Nursing Practitioner Diploma – Level 3 (City & Guilds)
Components:
~ Apprenticeship Standard – Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours.
~ Level 3 Diploma in Dental Nursing Practitioner (Diploma).
~ Level 2 Functional Skills in English (where applicable).
~ Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths (where applicable).
~ 20% Off-the-Job Training.
~ End Point Assessment – Multiple choice exams and a summative observation done prior to the gateway. EPAO will award pass or fail.
Please Note: Expert Witness Testimonies may contribute evidence only where assessor observation is not possible. However, they cannot replace the 3 required assessor observations.
Acceptable EWT Scenarios:
~ Procedures occurring outside the scheduled observation visits.
~ Emergency or rare cases (E.g., support during complex surgeries)
~ Workplace tasks when scheduling with the assessor were not feasible.

Functional Skills Maths & English Level 2
For new starts since 11th February 2025:
~ Aged 16-18 at start: No changes – the existing rules remain in place. Maths & English Level 2 remains mandatory.
~ Aged 19+ at start: As part of the initial assessment, providers must discuss and agree with the apprentice and employer whether English and Maths will be included in the apprenticeship. This decision must be documented in the training plan.
~ If English and/or Maths are included, apprentices must attempt the exams, but achievement is not required before taking the End Point Assessment (EPA).
